Otoplasty (Ear Surgery)

What is an Otoplasty?

An Otoplasty is a cosmetic surgical procedure designed to correct prominent ears by positioning them closer to the head.

Would this procedure be suitable for me?

An Otoplasty is suitable for people who are concerned with the prominence of their ears. This procedure is frequently performed on young people concerned by their appearance, but may performed on all age groups.

How is the procedure performed?

The aim is to create a more pronounced fold in the centre of the ear by remodelling the cartilage. Skin is removed from behind the ear, cartilage is removed and the ear naturally bends towards the side of the head.

What are the complications of the procedure?

Scars behind the ears are carefully placed and barely noticable. Bruising, swelling and tenderness may occur.

Will I be hospitalised and what is the recovery period?

Otoplasty procedures can be performed under sedation or General Anaesthetic in our Day Surgery Centre. Recovery varies from person to person, and most people return to basic activities within a few days. A turban bandage is often applied for one week, to help protect the ears. No strenuous activity is recommended for four weeks.

What results can I expect?

The aim is to reduce the prominence of the ears and create a natural appearance. It is very important to have realistic expectations regarding the outcome of the surgery.
