Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)
What is an Abdominoplasty?
An Abdominoplasty or "tummy tuck" is a cosmetic surgical procedure designed to improve the appearance of the lower abdominal area, by removing excess skin and fat.
Would this procedure be suitable for me?
An abdominoplasty is suitable for people who are concerned about the appearance of their abdomen, or for people affected by obesity and skin laxity following pregnancy or weight loss.
How is this procedure performed?
Excess skin and fat is removed from the navel to the pubic area, and the abdominal muscles tightened. The remaining skin is pulled down and reattached to the pubic area. The navel, still intact is then repositioned.
What are the complications of this procedure?
A scar is the inevitable complication of this surgery. This is located above the pubic area, from hip to hip. This fades with time and most people believe the benefits are worth it. Bikinis can still be worn without scar detection. Temporary numbness of the abdomen may occur.
Will I be hospitalised and what is the recovery period?
An abdominoplasty is performed under a general anaesthetic in a hospital environment. The average hospitalisation is two/three days. The recovery period varies from person to person, but most people return to basic activities within two weeks. No strenuous activity is advised for six weeks.
What results can I expect?
The aim is to reduce the prominence of the abdomen, and a flatter, tighter stomach is the ideal outcome. It is very important that patients have realistic expectations regarding the outcome of their surgery.
